[English]

The present study was conducted to estimate ETa in the Karkheh Basin (Khuzestan Province) for the rice cultivation period in the 2023-24 crop year. Four rice farms were selected using the traditional method and 4 other farms using Khoshkeh-kari technology. In farm monitoring, important indicators such as irrigation water depth, biomass, crop yield, field water efficiency, ETa, irrigation water productivity, and actual water use productivity (WPET) were measured and estimated. Then, using remote sensing technologies, ETLOOK and SEBAL algorithms in the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform environment, ETa was estimated for each of the 8 monitored farms. A rice crop map (RCM) was prepared using a machine learning model (MLM) and a random forest (RF) algorithm in the GEE for the study sub-basin to separate traditional and Khoshkeh-kari rice fields, and the spatial changes of  ETa and WPET at the basin level were determined. Based on the results of this study, the overall accuracy of rice field separation according to cultivation method was 99.65% and the Kappa coefficient was 0.87. In evaluating remote sensing technology, ETa results showed that the SEBAL algorithm had a very consistent estimate with a difference of about 3% less than field data. Regarding ETLOOK, although this algorithm showed ETa rates 32% and 26% lower than the field data for Khoshkeh-kari technology and traditional method, respectively, it had a good agreement in estimating WPET with a difference of less than 5%. Accordingly, at the basin level, the Khoshkeh-kari method was able to reduce water resources withdrawal (about 40%) and increased ETa and WPET by 13% and 19%, respectively, compared to the traditional method. In examining spatial maps, the results showed that the weighted average ETa of rice in the Karkheh sub-basin was 8,500 cubic m3/ha, which, with a cultivated area of over 34,000 hectares, the actual water consumption (ETa) and withdrawal from water resources (with an average irrigation efficiency of 28%) were 300 and 1,071 Mm3, respectively, for the rice cultivation period at the basin level. This study quantitatively demonstrated that remote sensing technology can provide accurate information about the spatial distribution of crops, planting area, production, and water resource consumption for decision-makers at different levels.
