This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the SEBAL and WaPOR algorithms in estimating ETa and WPET in agricultural lands of the Urmia Lake Basin and to compare their results with field measurements. In this study, 26 selected agricultural fields and orchards, including wheat, potato, alfalfa, sugar beet, sunflower, onion, squash, tomato, maize, apple, walnut, almond, grape, and plum, located in East Azerbaijan and West Azerbaijan provinces, were monitored during the 2022–2024 growing seasons. Field data, including irrigation water volume, soil moisture, crop yield, biomass, and other parameters required for calculating ETa based on the water balance method, were collected. The outputs of both algorithms were then validated against field measurements using statistical indices, and their performance was evaluated for potential application at the basin scale. The statistical indices RMSE, R², MAE, EF, NRMSE, and MBE were used to evaluate the algorithms. The results showed that both algorithms underestimated ETa compared with field-measured ETa. On average, SEBAL estimated ETa 28.48% lower and WaPOR approximately 33.24% lower than the field-measured values. However, the WPET values obtained from SEBAL and WaPOR were 29.04% and 34.48% higher, respectively, than the corresponding field-measured values. The RMSE for ETa estimation using SEBAL was approximately 10.40% lower than that obtained using WaPOR, indicating the higher accuracy of SEBAL under the conditions of the study area. The RMSE for WPET estimation using SEBAL was approximately 21.72% lower than that of WaPOR. Furthermore, the coefficients of determination (R²) for ETa and WPET were 0.97 and 0.98, respectively, for SEBAL, and 0.94 and 0.981, respectively, for WaPOR, indicating the greater ability of SEBAL to represent variations in these indicators compared with WaPOR. Overall, the results showed that SEBAL provided higher accuracy and reliability than WaPOR for monitoring actual evapotranspiration and actual water productivity at the field and orchard scales. .
