[English]

This study aimed to evaluate and improve the estimation of reference evapotranspiration under data-limited conditions using the Random Forest (RF) algorithm. From 17 weather stations, meteorological data of 2000–2025 were used in Mazandaran Province, northern Iran. First, ET₀ was calculated using the standard FAO Penman–Monteith method and eight empirical models classified into temperature-, radiation-, and humidity-based groups. The RF algorithm was then trained using different combinations of meteorological variables and a digital elevation model (DEM) to reproduce and improve ET₀. Model performance was evaluated using RMSE, NRMSE, MBE, Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NS), and Willmott’s index of agreement (d). The results showed that radiation-based models tended to overestimate ET₀, whereas temperature-based models generally underestimated it relative to the reference method. In contrast, the RF models showed improved performance across all scenarios and reduced systematic errors. The highest statistical accuracy was obtained for the radiation-based RF3 scenario incorporating DEM, with an NS value of 0.99 and the lowest RMSE of 0.18. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the importance of input variables varied among scenarios; maximum temperature showed the highest sensitivity in RF1 and RF2, sunshine duration was the most influential variable in RF3, and relative humidity had the dominant effect in RF4. By combining an ensemble of decision trees, the RF algorithm effectively captured non-linear relationships between input variables and ET₀. Nevertheless, model selection should consider not only statistical accuracy but also data availability and the intended application.
